Women's bowls pair dip out

Katelyn Inch and Selina Goddard came up just short today in their quest for a semi-final spot in the women's bowls pairs.

The New Zealand pair needed a comprehensive straight sets win over table-topping Wales to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

They began promisingly when they

won a tight first set 5-4, after trailing 4-2. Needing to win the second set by a wide margin to progress, the New Zealanders could make little headway against the strong Welsh players and lost the set 6-1. The ensuing tiebreaker, which had no bearing on who reached the semi-finals, went to Wales.

Goddard described the result as 'more bitter than sweet'. She said they had a mountain to climb going into the last match. 'We had to win in two sets and post some big scores,' she said. 'We created opportunites in the first set but they made us work for everything and even though we won it, the points differential was just too big.'

Inch and Goddard finished with a record of four wins and one loss.
