Mixed bowls pair into semis

New Zealand's bowls mixed pair have lost to South Africa in a tiebreaker but still progress to the semi-finals, and will play Scotland.

The team - Sonya Woodrow (with director Kimberly Carraher) and Kerrin Wheeler (with director Colin Wheeler) - were assured of making the semis but would have liked a good win over South Africa to finish their group play on a high note.

They started off as if they meant business, winning the first set 8-3. But the South Africans

fought back and held their nerve when things got tense, winning the second set 8-5. When the tiebreaker went the South Africans' way, out came the calculators to see who'd finished second behind Wales in the group.

Wales won four and lost one. Scotland and New Zealand won three and lost two, and it turned oout to be the Scots were second and New Zealand third. Wales meet England in the other semi-final.

Meanwhile Shannon Mcilroy, New Zealand's men's singles representative, won his second tiebreaker in as many days.

McIlroy beat Wayne Rittmuller of South Africa, but only after losing the first set 8-3. He climbed back to win the second set 8-5 and again came through in the tiebcreaker.

He won four of his five matches in Glasgow, but paid dearly for his loss to Northern Irishman Gary Kelly.

He was unfortunate to strike Kelly on a day when Kelly hardly put a foot wrong. After that result Mcilroy had to hope Kelly would lose a match along the way, but Kelly stayed strong, though he was pushed to a tiebreaker twice.
