Gymnast Alex Istock was below his best in the horizontal bar final and finished a distant eighth.
Istock was looking for a big performance in the horizontal bar final, after qualifying with a respectable score of 13.200.
However, the 21-year-old, who has dual American-New Zealand (through his mother) citizenship, had a nightmare day. There were a couple of fairly severe slips and he was punished for them by the judges. Istock was awarded a score of just 8.200. The winner, Felix Dolci of Canada, scored 14.237. Istock's qualifying score would have left him jostling for fourth place.
Though he has competed in high-level American college sport, representing the University of Michigan, and attended this year's world champs, this was his first Commonwealth Games.
