Following a constructive discussion and a shared commitment to our partnerships with mana whenua, the group acknowledged that Māori representation is a fundamental part of who we are, now and into the future.
As a region, we have a strong history of working together and remain committed to continuing that collaboration.
While not every council supports a single proposal, differing views have been respected. As a result, two proposals will be submitted:
- A region-wide proposal supported by Wellington City Council, Hutt City Council, Porirua City Council and South Wairarapa District Council.
- The second being a Wairarapa proposal supported by Carterton District Council and Masterton District Council.
The proposals will convey the positions of individual councils, and we will request that the Government keep the doors open for alternative arrangements for Kapiti Coast District Council and Upper Hutt City Council.
