From the Office of the Mayor: Experienced financial leaders encouraged to apply for independent committee position

Queenstown Lakes District Mayor John Glover is calling on suitably qualified and community-minded individuals to apply for a vacancy for an independent member of the Council’s Smart Finance Committee.

The committee plays an important role in supporting QLDC’s financial stewardship and oversight responsibilities. It monitors Council’s financial strategy and performance against the Long Term Plan (LTP) and Annual Plan (AP), and makes recommendations to Council on significant financial matters.

Mayor Glover explained that the new member would join five sitting Councillors to bring an

independent and impartial perspective.

“Local government finances are naturally complex and broad in scope. We’re looking for a person with strong financial expertise and governance experience who can provide independent, objective advice,” he said.

“At the end of the day, we want to know that we’re getting maximum value from every ratepayer dollar spent. Big ticket items always pose challenges, be that in procurement, oversight or delivery, and this is a particular area of interest for this Council.”

“The challenge of delivering of our ambitious work programme comes at a time of significant change in how local government operates. The committee will play a key role in helping QLDC navigate central government’s reforms keeping the interests of our residents and ratepayers front and centre,” said Mayor Glover.

As outlined in the job description, the successful candidate will:

• Demonstrate strong financial literacy and analytical capability.

• Bring an independent and impartial perspective.

• Have experience operating in governance, advisory, or senior leadership environments.

• Be comfortable reviewing complex financial information and contributing to strategic discussions.

• Be committed to supporting sound financial stewardship for the Queenstown Lakes District.
