This year, New Zealand National Poetry Day is on Friday 28 August. To celebrate, we're running a series of Found Poetry Workshops for young people in our libraries!
To celebrate National Poetry Day,
we want to show you that anyone can be a poet!In the week of 24–30 August, we're running a series of Found Poetry Workshops for young people in our libraries.
Found poetry is the act of creating poems through taking existing texts and rearranging or transforming them into something new. You can do this through taking a collage approach and cutting out words, phrases, or full sentences to rearrange into a poem, or by creating a blackout poem and blacking out all the words that aren't part of your poem or by highlighting all the words that are.
In our Found Poetry Workshops you will be using pages from damaged library items and copies of documents from our friends at Wellington City Archives to create your poems, but you can find poetry anywhere! (Did you see what we did there?) Found poetry can be created from any text, from news headlines and street signs to graffiti or a series of messages with your mother about empty oat milk bottles. Found poetry is all about reshaping something to uncover fresh meaning in unexpected places.
Our series of workshops are for older tamariki and taiohi, with some focusing on particular age groups, so take a look at the events listed below to find the one that works best for you.
