Olivia Selemaia, who many predicted to be a medallist, was eliminated early in the women's 69kg weightlifting.
The 19 year-old Aucklander is regarded as an outstanding talent and in her short career has already won a silver medal in the
Commonwealth championships and finished eighth in the world champs. She elected to enter the contest at 100kg in the snatch. Nearly all of the other 10 contestants entered earlier and all registered a successful lift. But Selemaia had three consecutive misses and was out of the contest.
Not surprisingly, she looked in shock afterwards. The gold went to Canadian Charlotte Simoneau, who totalled 240kg, which put her 13kg clear of anyone else. Simoneau entered the snatch at 104kg, the only lifter who waited longer than Selemaia to take her first lift.
