McGregor 15th in gymnastics final

Courtney McGregor, back in top competition after a break of five years, finished 15th in the women's gymnastics all-around event.

She totalled 47.150 points after a mixed day. McGregor was extremely good on the vault, which augurs well for her chances in the specialist vault event, about average

on the beam and floor exercises, and sub-par on the uneven bars. The gold medal went to Elsabeth Black of Canada with 53.050.

The New Zealander began her day in an unfortunate manner with a mistake on the uneven bars, but she fought back and certainly did not look out of place in the final.

McGregor, 27, has returned to the sport after an absence of five years. She was a leading gymnast a decade ago and competed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

She moved to the United States to study and compete for Boise State University, serving as the university's gymnastics team captain. McGregor was forced out of the sport for a year after rupturing an Achilles tendon and retired a year or so later.

These days she lives in Auckland where she is completing her final year of medical studies at Auckland University, including clinical placements at North Shore Hospital.

She said she really enjoyed herself during the final. 'I could never have said that before I stopped. I was so serious. It's nice to be able to look around, take in the atmosphere and enjoy the day.'
